My Top 10 Albums

A few months ago, my boyfriend Jason and I were at my mom's house for dinner, and found ourselves in a discussion of the top ten albums of all time. Obviously we each had our own ideas about which 25-minute-or-longer musical artifacts hold the most significance, and it ended up being a really interesting conversation.… Continue reading My Top 10 Albums

New Fave: Glass Animals’ How to Be a Human Being

In the months leading up to their sophomore album, Glass Animals released a few tracks that rocked my summer. "Life Itself" and "Youth" (which happen to be the first two tracks on the album) tell stories with infectious rhythms and melodies. I couldn't get enough. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yd9p4n5hLEg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ZdsmLgCVdU Needless to say, my calendar was marked for… Continue reading New Fave: Glass Animals’ How to Be a Human Being

“Why Are You OK” Leaves One Feeling Less Than OK

Last Friday, Band of Horses released their fifth studio album, Why are You OK. I was hyped for this release, but my mood deflated as I listened through it. I loved the singles released in advance- "Casual Party" and "In a Drawer" definitely caught my attention in the weeks leading up to the release. However, I got… Continue reading “Why Are You OK” Leaves One Feeling Less Than OK

BOY Blossoms on We Were Here

BOY's debut album Mutual Friends (2011) had me hooked at first listen. "Skin" was the first song I learned to play on the guitar, and the voices of Valeska Steiner and Sonja Glass were the first I heard on the main stage at First Avenue. They're kind of my absolute favorites. As such, I was thrilled to hear that their… Continue reading BOY Blossoms on We Were Here

Album Review: Wilder Mind by Mumford & Sons

If you're anything like me, you were probably sitting on the edge of your seat when you heard that Mumford & Sons were releasing a new album. After the band declared an indefinite hiatus in 2013, I was ecstatic to hear that they were back on the scene. However, rumors started swirling that their new… Continue reading Album Review: Wilder Mind by Mumford & Sons

Album Review: Strange Trails by Lord Huron

Today I bring you Lord Huron, an indie/folk/Americana group that started with one guy in Michigan (hence the name) several years ago. Ben Schneider's around-the-campfire style was brought to life in Lonesome Dreams, the group's first full-length album released in 2012.  I hadn't heard of Lord Huron until "The Stranger" shuffled into my life on an indie playlist. The song… Continue reading Album Review: Strange Trails by Lord Huron

Album of the week: Imagine Dragons’ Smoke + Mirrors

Yesterday Las Vegas rockers Imagine Dragons released their second album, Smoke + Mirrors. Sophomore records tend to be flops, especially when a band's first album is so good. 2012's Night Visions gave us such hits as "Demons," "Radioactive" and "It's Time." As such, I was doubtful that the group would produce another killer album, let alone one that is perhaps better than the… Continue reading Album of the week: Imagine Dragons’ Smoke + Mirrors

Album Review: Let’s Be Still from The Head and the Heart

This Seattle-based indie-folk group really broke onto the scene with their hit, "Lost in My Mind" in 2011. Now they're back, with a new album called Let's Be Still. They've opened for acts like My Morning Jacket, Iron & Wine, and Death Cab for Cutie, but the group is definitely capable of headlining. The sextet is… Continue reading Album Review: Let’s Be Still from The Head and the Heart
